About the position

The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood samples from pediatric and adult patients for laboratory testing at Cherokee Indian Hospital. This role involves receiving and organizing blood samples from various departments and outside locations, ensuring proper labeling and distribution to the appropriate laboratory sections. The Phlebotomist must maintain a clean and safe work environment, adhere to safety protocols, and keep accurate records of all collections. The position requires effective communication with patients and staff while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with accreditation standards.

Responsibilities

  • Collect blood samples from pediatric and adult patients for laboratory testing.
  • Receive and organize blood samples from outside locations for laboratory processing.
  • Label specimens from outside clinics and distribute them to the proper laboratory section after collection.
  • Gather supplies and equipment necessary for blood sample collection.
  • Maintain cleanliness and restock the blood collection area and phlebotomy trays.
  • Record and maintain a daily phlebotomy log-sheet and prepare monthly workload reports.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Assist in maintaining CAP/JCAHO accreditation by complying with standards set by accrediting organizations.
  • Perform waived testing procedures as required and therapeutic phlebotomy as requested.
  • Organize and prioritize work efficiently to maintain productivity without sacrificing quality.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Diploma or certificate of completion from a phlebotomy program is required.
  • Certification in phlebotomy (ASCP) or equivalent is required within 12 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of medical laboratory operations and phlebotomy procedures is essential.
  • Skill in obtaining blood specimens from patients under various conditions is necessary.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information and adhere to privacy regulations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a clinical laboratory setting is preferred.
  • Ability to provide clinical assistance and training to extern students in phlebotomy.
