About the position

The Phlebotomist position at CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center - Bergan Mercy focuses on patient-centered care within a level I trauma center and academic medical center. The role is essential for obtaining blood specimens and supporting the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, ensuring the integrity of samples and maintaining professional interactions with patients and staff.

Responsibilities

• Obtain blood specimens by capillary puncture or venipuncture using appropriate technique.
• Correctly identify patients per written protocol and properly label specimens accurately and completely while maintaining the integrity of the specimen.
• Exercise judgment in determining work priority and interact with nursing units to ascertain critical priorities and verify discrepancies.
• Dispose of contaminated lab supplies and handle all lab specimens regarding potential health hazards according to written procedures.
• Receive laboratory specimens, order tests, process specimens using the centrifuge, and distribute specimens to appropriate testing areas while communicating special instructions.
• Maintain a professional attitude with patients, visitors, hospital staff, and fellow employees while assuring the confidentiality of all hospital information.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED is required.
• Preferred: Phlebotomy certification or completion of a phlebotomy course.
• Preferred: Six months previous experience in phlebotomy and customer service.
