Responsibilities

  • Perform skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for blood specimen collection.
  • Conduct computer data entry, filing, and telephone communication as part of clerical duties.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of laboratory test terminology and procedures.
  • Exhibit good communication skills and telephone etiquette when interacting with patients and visitors.
  • Utilize proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment for specimen collection from newborns to geriatric patients.
  • Process microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens.
  • Prepare specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
  • Stock and order routine laboratory supplies as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas.
  • Load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation according to established policies and procedures.
  • Assist in picking up samples at the hospital or operating room and sorting samples for analysis.
  • Support pathology and inventory management, including replenishing supplies and handling mail deliveries.
  • Perform point-of-care testing after training and documented competency.
  • Resolve staffing issues as they arise.
  • Complete other tasks or responsibilities as assigned by the department manager or director.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • BLS certification within 45 days of hire and maintained current is required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of clinical laboratory experience preferred.
