Responsibilities
- Perform skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for blood specimen collection.
- Conduct computer data entry, filing, and telephone communication as part of clerical duties.
- Demonstrate knowledge of laboratory test terminology and procedures.
- Exhibit good communication skills and telephone etiquette when interacting with patients and visitors.
- Utilize proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment for specimen collection from newborns to geriatric patients.
- Process microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens.
- Prepare specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
- Stock and order routine laboratory supplies as needed.
- Maintain cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas.
- Load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation according to established policies and procedures.
- Assist in picking up samples at the hospital or operating room and sorting samples for analysis.
- Support pathology and inventory management, including replenishing supplies and handling mail deliveries.
- Perform point-of-care testing after training and documented competency.
- Resolve staffing issues as they arise.
- Complete other tasks or responsibilities as assigned by the department manager or director.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- BLS certification within 45 days of hire and maintained current is required.
- Minimum of two (2) years of clinical laboratory experience preferred.
