About the position

The Phone Triage RN/Registered Nurse position in Gastroenterology is a vital role within the Central Nurse Triage team, located in Oak Brook Terrace, Illinois. This position offers a hybrid work environment, requiring 1-2 days a week in one of the following locations: Lockport, Naperville, Oak Brook, or Warrenville. The role is full-time, with a commitment of 40 hours per week, typically scheduled from Monday to Friday, between 8:00 AM and 5:30 PM. In this role, the RN will manage patient health concerns and symptoms through telephone interactions, utilizing physician-approved protocols for assessment and management. This includes responding to and prioritizing incoming patient messages and test results, scheduling appointments, and obtaining insurance prior-authorization for tests and procedures. The RN will also be responsible for reviewing and authorizing or denying provider-ordered prescriptions in accordance with established guidelines. Patient education is a key component of this role, as the RN will educate patients and their families about diagnostic procedures, medications, nutrition, and overall health maintenance. The RN will maintain accurate and detailed patient records, documenting all communications and patient education provided. Additionally, the RN will serve as a clinical resource for staff, performing and delegating various tasks to facilitate patient care, and assisting in the orientation and training of new staff members. The role emphasizes service excellence, patient advocacy, and the application of current nursing practices to meet the needs of patients effectively. Other duties may be assigned as necessary to support the healthcare team and enhance nursing and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

  • Manage patient health concerns and symptoms via telephone interactions using physician-approved protocols.
  • Respond to and prioritize incoming patient messages and test results.
  • Schedule appointments and tests, and obtain insurance prior-authorization as needed.
  • Review and authorize/deny provider-ordered prescriptions according to established guidelines.
  • Deliver patient education tailored to individual needs as prescribed by the Provider or Group policy.
  • Educate patients and/or family members about diagnostic procedures, medications, nutrition, and health maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records and document patient education provided.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for staff, answering questions and providing assistance as appropriate.
  • Assist in orienting and training new staff members.
  • Utilize current nursing practices to provide patient care while exemplifying service excellence.

Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in nursing.
  • Knowledge of nursing skills in accordance with nursing standards in the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and HIPAA regulations.
  • Prefer a minimum of one year of professional nursing experience in a clinical or hospital setting, but may consider new graduates under specific circumstances.
