About the position

The Photo Editor is a pivotal role at National Geographic, responsible for researching, curating, and editing visual content across various platforms, with a strong emphasis on digital media. This includes managing content for NationalGeographic.com, its app, Instagram, and other social media channels, as well as email newsletters. The ideal candidate will possess a keen eye for detail, a digital-first mindset, and a commitment to editorial integrity. The role requires quick and accurate research of visual content spanning diverse subjects such as science, health, technology, wildlife, history, nature, and travel. Collaboration is key, as the Photo Editor will work closely with National Geographic editors, staff photographers, and contributing photographers and writers. This position offers a unique opportunity to leverage knowledge and appreciation for visual storytelling and photojournalism, while also innovating new ways to visually represent stories and engage new audiences. In terms of responsibilities, the Photo Editor will conduct photographic research, curate, and license photography for all platforms, ensuring that all workflows, billing, contracts, and other logistical aspects are managed effectively. The role also involves meeting budgets and deadlines, gathering and disseminating caption information, verifying credit lines, and ensuring the veracity of images. Additionally, the Photo Editor will design and build stories in the content management system (CMS), focusing on strong visual pacing and pitching innovative uses of existing images. Collaboration with staff photographers on various types of photography, including portraiture and reportage, is also a critical aspect of the role. The position requires a minimum of three years of experience in photo research or editing, along with excellent visual taste and a broad knowledge of visual storytelling. The candidate should be enthusiastic about collaborating on new ideas and possess a drive to reach new audiences, with an understanding of audience data and SEO-friendly presentation. Strong research skills, communication abilities, and the capacity to work in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines are essential. The Photo Editor should also be self-motivated, resourceful, and capable of negotiating rates with contractors and third parties. Familiarity with web tools and programs, including content management systems, Microsoft Office, and Adobe software, is also required.

Responsibilities

  • Research, curate, and license photography for all platforms, focusing on digital.
  • Support workflow, billing, contracts, and other photo logistics.
  • Ensure budgets and deadlines are met; gather and disseminate caption information.
  • Verify credit lines and check image veracity when in question.
  • Make images available for broader use across platforms.
  • Design and build stories in CMS with a focus on strong visual pacing.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of experience with photo research or photo editing.
  • Excellent visual taste and a wide range of knowledge about visual storytelling and photojournalism.
  • Enthusiasm to collaborate on new ideas and think creatively about visual representation.
  • Drive to reach new audiences and an understanding of audience data and SEO-friendly presentation.
  • Proven deep, expedient research skills with agencies, individual contributors, archives, libraries, and social media.

  • Ability to multitask and balance short and long lead deadlines.
  • Self-motivated and resourceful.
  • Ability to negotiate rates with relevant contractors and third parties.
  • Knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and Bridge, Media Pro, PhotoMechanic, Photo Supreme, Premiere, FTP, and social media platforms.

Nice-to-haves

  • Some experience with or knowledge of National Geographic's core subject areas (wildlife, history, archaeology, nature, science, and travel) strongly preferred.
