About the position

The Photo Editor for National Geographic is a pivotal role that involves researching, curating, and editing visual content for the organization's most prominent digital platforms. This includes NationalGeographic.com, its mobile app, Instagram, and various other social media channels, as well as email newsletters. The ideal candidate will possess a keen eye for detail, a digital-first approach, and a strong sense of editorial integrity. The role requires the ability to work efficiently and accurately while researching visual content across diverse subjects such as science, health, technology, wildlife, history, nature, and travel. Collaboration is key, as the Photo Editor will work closely with National Geographic editors, staff photographers, and contributing photographers and writers. This position offers a unique opportunity to leverage knowledge and appreciation for visual storytelling and photojournalism, while also bringing innovative ideas to the table to visually represent stories and engage new audiences. In terms of responsibilities, the Photo Editor will be tasked with photographic research, which includes curating and licensing photography for all platforms, with a particular emphasis on digital. The role also involves supporting workflow, managing billing, contracts, and other logistical aspects of photography. The Photo Editor must ensure that budgets and deadlines are adhered to, gather and disseminate caption information, verify credit lines, and check the veracity of images when necessary. Additionally, the role encompasses digital production, where the Photo Editor will design and build stories in the content management system (CMS) with a focus on strong visual pacing. They will also be expected to research and pitch visually innovative uses of existing images, demonstrating an understanding of the various platforms and their respective audiences. Photo production is another critical aspect of the role, requiring collaboration with staff photographers on various types of photography, including portraiture, reportage, conceptual, or still life. The Photo Editor will work with ideas and photographers both in the studio and on location, ensuring that the visual representation of stories aligns with National Geographic's high standards.

Responsibilities

  • Research, curate, and license photography for all platforms, focusing on digital.
  • Support workflow, billing, contracts, and other photo logistics.
  • Ensure budgets and deadlines are met; gather and disseminate caption information.
  • Verify credit lines and check image veracity when in question.
  • Make images available for broader use across platforms.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of experience with photo research or photo editing.
  • Excellent visual taste and a wide range of knowledge about visual storytelling and photojournalism.
  • Enthusiasm to collaborate on new ideas and think creatively about visual representation.
  • Drive to reach new audiences with an understanding of audience data and SEO-friendly presentation.
  • Proven deep, expedient research skills with agencies, individual contributors, archives, libraries, and social media.
  • Strong communication and collaborative abilities.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to multitask and balance short and long lead deadlines.
  • Self-motivated and resourceful.
  • Ability to negotiate rates with relevant contractors and third parties.
  • Knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, and social media platforms.

Nice-to-haves

  • Some experience with or knowledge of National Geographic's core subject areas (wildlife, history, nature, science, and travel) is preferred.
