The Maine State Archives is seeking a dedicated and motivated Photographer to join our team. This position plays a crucial role in the preservation and accessibility of historical documents through digital imaging. As a Photographer, you will be responsible for scanning and photographing historical paper documents, ensuring they are indexed and made publicly accessible. Your work will involve using various scanning and photography equipment to create high-quality digital files. Additionally, you will engage in graphic design for both print and digital media, convert microfilm to digital records, and write digital records back to microfilm. You will also have the opportunity to participate in exhibition and project teams as required, contributing to the overall mission of the Department of the Secretary of State. A typical day in this role includes overseeing, planning, coordinating, and shooting photographic and video essays to document a variety of programs, conferences, events, and projects. You will create and prepare photographic images for publication in various media formats, and design complex graphic art for both print and digital platforms. Utilizing specialized graphic design and imaging software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Pagemaker, and InDesign, you will manipulate text and graphic elements to produce effective informational and promotional materials. Furthermore, you will operate a range of audio/visual equipment, including digital and film cameras, video cameras, and presentation systems, providing technical support to the Department. To ensure the smooth operation of the imaging unit, you will participate in equipment maintenance and make recommendations regarding imaging hardware and software. Your knowledge of photography, videography, and graphic design principles will be essential in producing high-quality materials that meet the needs of the Department.
