About the position

WMTV 15 News in Madison, Wisconsin, is seeking a talented photojournalist and video editor who excels at identifying, gathering, and editing powerful images and compelling sound. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of producing content that is creatively, technically, and brand-focused for both television and digital platforms. As part of the #1 station in the market, recognized for excellence in news and weather coverage, the photojournalist will be responsible for producing content for all platforms, including broadcast on WMTV newscasts and publication across the station's CTV, digital, and social media platforms, such as wmtv15news.com. The role requires high energy and a willingness to innovate, as the candidate will be expected to reflect on their work and find ways to improve upon traditional methods. The position involves both solo work and collaboration with reporters and anchors on live shots, investigative content, and special projects, including live, remote broadcasts. The photojournalist will shoot and edit video for daily news broadcasts and all of the station's digital platforms, working closely with digital producers to share updates, video, and still images from the field as new information becomes available. Candidates must possess solid news judgment, excellent communication skills, and the ability to problem-solve effectively. Writing skills are a plus, as the role requires conducting and logging interviews, providing shot sheets, and writing copy when working solo. Collaboration is key when working as part of a team, and candidates must demonstrate journalistic ethics, strong editorial judgment, and creativity. The ability to meet deadlines, multi-task in a fast-paced environment, and maintain a positive attitude is essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, gather, and edit powerful images and compelling sound for news broadcasts.
  • Produce content for all platforms including broadcast, CTV, digital, and social media.
  • Collaborate with reporters and anchors on live shots and special projects.
  • Shoot and edit video for daily news broadcasts.
  • Work closely with digital producers to share updates and content from the field.
  • Conduct and log interviews, provide shot sheets, and write copy when working solo.
  • Contribute to the entire editorial process and maintain journalistic ethics.

Requirements

  • Preferably a college degree in journalism or a related field.
  • At least one year of newsroom or digital producing experience.
  • Strong research skills and critical thinking abilities.
  • Ability to work quickly and multi-task under deadline pressure.
  • Willingness to work long hours, weekends, and overnights for breaking news.
  • Established presence on digital platforms, including social media and station website.
  • Working knowledge of CMS and digital platforms, including ARC, Social News Desk, and CrowdTangle.
  • Photoshop experience is a plus.
  • Understanding of and adherence to AP Style.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
