About the position

We are seeking a dedicated Software Engineer to join our Group Benefits IT organization, focusing on the development of the Group Benefits Real Time Quoting (RTQi) application. This role offers a unique opportunity to leverage your AWS Cloud and PHP coding skills throughout the entire software development lifecycle. You will be part of a dynamic Scrum team, collaborating closely with a Technical Lead and fellow Software Engineers to design and develop innovative solutions that deliver optimal business value. As a Software Engineer, you will engage in project participation from conception through completion. This includes gathering and interpreting requirements, internal architecture design, writing modular code, unit testing, and delivering high-quality finished products. You will demonstrate a high level of practical knowledge in PHP and have experience with MySQL database management, including schema design and writing efficient queries. Your role will also involve troubleshooting and resolving application issues in both test and production environments, ensuring application performance and reliability. In addition to your technical responsibilities, you will contribute to software quality practices, including peer reviews, and collaborate with a high-performing team, Product Owners, and Business stakeholders. You will be responsible for adhering to software engineering practices, managing source code, and ensuring code quality through governance and automated testing. This position not only allows you to drive work independently but also encourages collaboration towards achieving business outcomes. You will act as a resource for colleagues with less experience, fostering a supportive environment that promotes growth and advancement based on demonstrative performance.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in project conception through completion, including gathering requirements and delivering a high-quality finished product.
  • Demonstrate high levels of practical working knowledge of PHP.
  • Manage MySQL database experience including schema design, table normalization, and writing efficient queries.
  • Estimate, design, build, test, and deliver high-quality code as part of the development/production support team.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve application issues within test and production environments, including application performance.
  • Contribute to Software Quality practices including peer reviews.
  • Organize tasks, prioritize deadlines, and manage expectations effectively.
  • Collaborate with a high-performing team, Product Owner(s), and Business stakeholders.
  • Responsible for Software Engineering Practices, including source code management and automated testing.
  • Drive work independently or collaboratively as part of a Scrum Team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Architecture, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Three years of post-baccalaureate experience in a related position.
  • Experience working within AWS Cloud environment and using AWS Console for application configuration and code development utilizing PHP7+ and CodeIgniter framework.
  • Experience with TPA libraries for Excel, PDFs, SOAP web services, JSON, and XML.
  • Experience with databases such as AWS MariaDB and PostgreSQL; Oracle and SQL Server experience is a plus.
  • Experience with UI applications including HTML, JavaScript, and jQuery.
  • Experience with REST API and SOAP services.
  • Experience with DevOps CI/CD, Git/GitHub, Jenkins, UDeploy, MySQL/SQL Dev, Dynatrace, and SPLUNK is a plus.
  • Experience in Object Oriented Design, Relational Database Design, RESTful Service Design, API consumption, secure coding, Test Driven Development, Scrum, and SAFE Agile.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with additional programming languages or frameworks.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies beyond Scrum.
  • Knowledge of performance monitoring tools and techniques.
