About the position

The Physical Education Teacher - Long Term Substitute position at Newton Public Schools is responsible for providing a developmentally appropriate educational program for middle school students. The teacher will supervise students in the physical education classroom and gymnasium, develop lesson plans, deliver instruction, and collaborate with other staff to enhance educational outcomes. This role requires effective communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress and instructional programs.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise students within the physical education classroom and gymnasium.
  • Develop lesson plans and deliver instruction within established curriculum guidelines.
  • Adjust curricula to accommodate children with disabilities or different physical abilities.
  • Collaborate with other teachers, professional staff, and administrators to improve instruction.
  • Engage parents/guardians in discussions regarding instructional programs and student progress.
  • Create and maintain an effective and developmentally appropriate learning environment for students.
  • Prepare daily lessons and activities.
  • Manage student behavior to provide a safe and optimal classroom climate.
  • Differentiate instruction to address individual needs.
  • Collect data to document student progress and aid in planning.
  • Assess student progress towards learning targets, objectives, and expectations.
  • Provide feedback on progress to students, parents, and administration.
  • Identify student needs and cooperate with other professional staff members to address social, emotional, and learning problems.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and professional development activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education or related field.
  • A valid license in Physical Education from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Consistent and on-time attendance is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in Physical Education or related field.
  • Coursework in physical, health, and general education topics such as exercise philosophy, kinesiology, human development, and educational psychology.
  • Demonstrated experience with grade-level learning principles.
