About the position

The Custodian position at Evergreen Elementary is a part-time role requiring 2 hours of work per day for 180 days each year. The primary responsibility of the custodian is to maintain the cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and security of the school facility. This includes preparing the building for school and public events as needed. The role demands a commitment to providing a sanitary and safe environment for students and staff, ensuring that all areas of the school are clean and well-maintained. The custodian will perform a variety of cleaning tasks, including vacuuming, dusting, mopping, sweeping, and cleaning bathrooms and showers. Additionally, the custodian will be responsible for opening and locking the building, operating the alarm system, and maintaining awareness of after-hours building users. The custodian will also set up and take down equipment and furniture for various events, assist teachers and students in locating equipment, and perform major summer cleaning tasks to prepare the facility for the new school year. Other duties include performing minor repairs, conducting security checks, and operating various cleaning equipment. The position requires effective communication with students, parents, staff, and the public to ensure safety and security. The custodian may also be involved in grounds maintenance, including sweeping walkways and removing litter, to maintain an attractive school environment. This role requires the ability to handle frequent interruptions and deal with a wide range of behaviors from students and the public. Physical demands include standing for prolonged periods, moving heavy objects, and operating power equipment. The custodian must also adhere to safety and security procedures and may need to complete training in infection control. A pre-placement physical and testing is required, with costs covered by the district.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans assigned parts of the school facility to provide a sanitary and safe environment for student learning and support functions.
  • Opens and/or locks building doors and operates alarm system for security according to established procedures.
  • Sets up and takes down a wide variety of equipment and furniture for events, assemblies, and public use of school facilities.
  • Maintains effective communication with students, parents, staff, and the public for safety, security, and public relations.
  • Performs major summer cleaning of the facility, including floor finishes, furniture, equipment, painting, and repairs.
  • Spot cleans and makes minor repairs, such as painting, plastering, and fixing leaks.
  • Performs security checks of the facility, perimeter, doors, and windows.
  • Pressure washes locker rooms, showers, and kitchen mats as needed.
  • Washes windows.
  • Operates or uses hydraulic lift, ladders, scaffolding, blowers, and floor polishing equipment.
  • May be required to operate building heating/ventilation controls and monitor fire alarms.
  • Moves supplies and materials as directed and may be required to sign for and receive deliveries.
  • May be called on to provide off-hours access to student lockers.
  • Stocks and orders custodial supplies as assigned.
  • Assists with maintenance of grounds as assigned, including sweeping walkways and removing litter.

Requirements

  • Education, training, skills, and experience necessary to carry out the assignment.
  • Experience with cleaning equipment and techniques preferred.
  • Ability to distinguish cleaning compounds and materials.
  • Ability to learn the operation of a variety of cleaning equipment and tools.
  • Knowledge of routine repairs and maintenance, including some painting, carpentry, plumbing, and other general maintenance.
  • Ability to move and position furniture and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety and security procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the public.

Nice-to-haves
