About the position

The Physical Plant Maintenance Trades Mechanic I-II position at the Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) is crucial for ensuring the efficient operation of physical plant facilities. This role involves performing preventative maintenance, HVAC maintenance and repair, and restoration activities across various traditional trades fields. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining the functionality of structures, systems, and equipment, which is essential for the overall well-being of the facilities managed by DHSS. In this position, the Trades Mechanic will engage in routine and preventative maintenance tasks, which may include replacing light bulbs, lubricating pumps, cleaning filters, and inspecting gauges and pumps. The role also encompasses performing minor repairs in areas such as plumbing, painting, and carpentry, as well as assisting in groundskeeping activities, including snow and ice removal, grass cutting, and trash removal. The Trades Mechanic will work closely with technical supervisors to assist in plumbing and building repairs, and may also operate machinery and vehicles to transport tools and materials necessary for maintenance tasks. This position requires a proactive approach to maintenance and repair, ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently and effectively to support the mission of DHSS in improving the quality of life for Delaware citizens. The role is integral to maintaining a safe and functional environment within the facilities, contributing to the overall health and well-being of the community.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance and preventative maintenance on equipment and facilities.
• Replace light bulbs, lubricate pumps, clean filters, check fan belts, and inspect gauges and pumps.
• Conduct minor repairs in plumbing, painting, carpentry, and other trade areas.
• Assist in machinery and equipment repair as needed.
• Participate in groundskeeping activities, including snow/ice removal and trash removal.
• Assist technical supervisor in plumbing and building repairs and structural additions.
• Operate machinery and vehicles to transport tools and materials.
• May perform highway lighting or drawbridge maintenance.

Requirements

• Knowledge of operating and maintaining a variety of equipment, hand and power tools used in trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting, or HVAC.
• Knowledge of performing work in a variety of trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting, or HVAC for Level I.
• Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked, or cancelled).
• Six months experience in operating and maintaining equipment and tools for Level II.
• Six months experience in performing work in trades fields for Level II.
• Knowledge of interpreting blueprints, schematics, or technical drawings for Level II.
• Knowledge of record keeping for Level II.
