About the position

The Physical Substation Electrical Engineer position at Mesa Associates, Inc. involves working within the Power Delivery Substation group to design and develop high voltage transmission substations. The role emphasizes collaboration with senior management and clients, problem-solving in substation design, and adherence to quality and safety standards. The engineer will be responsible for creating deliverables, mentoring junior staff, and fostering strong customer relationships while ensuring projects meet client specifications and are completed on time and within budget.

Responsibilities

• Work under the direction of the Physical Group Lead.
• Complete substation physical design projects to meet client standards and practices.
• Develop deliverables such as General Arrangements, Equipment Plans, Elevations, Sections, Control House Layouts, Grounding analysis/design, Switchgear design, Conduit and Cable design, and Creation of Bills of Material using AutoCAD.
• Foster strong customer relationships through communications and support.
• Estimate and assist in the preparation of bid packages.
• Attend scoping meetings as requested for projects.
• Complete assignments within budget and schedule with a high degree of accuracy to provide quality deliverables.
• Mentor other designers/engineers in the group to increase knowledge of physical substation design.
• Check/review other personnel's work for accuracy and adherence to client/national standards.
• Independently evaluate, select, and apply engineering principles and practices relevant to the project requirements.
• Promote a strong safety culture within the team and advocate the incorporation of safe work practices into all activities.
• Work with the Physical Group Lead and Program Manager to identify potential areas of engineering process and/or procedure improvements.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, or related from an ABET accredited college or university is required.
• Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in 69kV to 500kV substation physical design is required.
• Experience in generation plant switchyard physical design is desirable.
• EIT (Engineer in Training) is desirable.
• Working knowledge of computers and software such as AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite, and software used for specific technical applications.
