Responsibilities

  • Assess patients and develop treatment plans in collaboration with physicians and other clinicians.
  • Compile rehabilitation strategies involving specific exercises to stretch and strengthen muscles, improve posture, balance, and endurance.
  • Document progress, re-evaluate physical findings, and modify treatment strategies as appropriate.
  • Work as a team with other professionals to set goals for maximal patient functional independence.
  • Assist in restoring, maintaining, and promoting overall fitness and health.
  • Test and measure patients' strength, range of motion, balance, coordination, posture, muscle performance, respiration, and motor function.
  • Record prognosis, treatment, response, and progress in patient's chart.
  • Identify and document goals, anticipated progress, and plans for re-evaluation.
  • Administer manual exercises, massage, or traction to relieve pain, increase patient strength, or prevent deformity.
  • Evaluate effects of treatment at various stages and adjust treatments to achieve maximum benefit.
  • Instruct patients and families in treatment procedures to be continued at home.
  • Teach patients how to use assistive and adaptive devices such as crutches, prostheses, and wheelchairs.
  • Provide educational information about physical therapy, injury prevention, ergonomics, and health promotion.
  • Evaluate, fit, or adjust prosthetic or orthotic devices or recommend modifications to orthotist.
  • Supervise tech or physical therapy assistants that may be assisting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in physical therapy from an accredited program; successful completion of clinical internship.
  • Current state physical therapist license.
  • Current CPR certificate.
  • Any required CEUs for license renewal.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in physical therapy preferred.
  • Experience in outpatient orthopedic settings.
