About the position

The Physical Therapy Assistant at Detroit Medical Center will provide direct patient care under the supervision of a Physical Therapist in an orthopedic-based clinic. This role involves assisting in patient evaluations, administering treatments, and participating in program development and education activities. The position is full-time, requiring 40 hours per week, and is situated within a large healthcare organization known for its expertise in rehabilitation medicine.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care using standard physical therapy procedures under the supervision of a Physical Therapist.
  • Instruct patients and family members on treatment plans and home exercise programs.
  • Assist Physical Therapist in patient evaluations and assess functional skills of patients.
  • Administer therapeutic exercises, gait training, mat mobility, and transfers.
  • Perform prosthetic training and administer modality treatments.
  • Measure and recommend equipment such as wheelchairs and orthoses.
  • Participate in chart rounds, admission and discharge conferences, and family conferences.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and documentation.
  • Attend and contribute to departmental meetings and program development activities.
  • Supervise and evaluate students and volunteers.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Physical Therapy with coursework in anatomy, biology, physiology, and psychology.
  • One year of experience in a clinical setting preferred.
  • Current license to practice as a PTA in the state of Michigan.
  • Oral and written communication skills adequate for therapeutic and professional interaction.
  • Basic knowledge and skill in common Physical Therapy practices and procedures.
  • Visual acuity to observe patient responses to treatment and operate equipment.
  • Manual dexterity to operate equipment and sensory ability to distinguish hot and cold during treatments.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in an orthopedic clinic setting.
  • Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems.
