About the position

The Physical Therapy Assistant will work at the 61st Medical Squadron at Los Angeles AFB, providing therapeutic services under the supervision of a physical therapist. The role involves administering treatment programs, instructing patients, and ensuring the upkeep of the physical therapy clinic. The position requires strong communication and organizational skills, as well as the ability to work independently and under pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out a program of corrective exercise and treatment for assigned patients, as directed by the physical therapist.
  • Administer treatments such as exercise, gait training, massage, whirlpool, hot packs, diathermy, ultrasound, paraffin, ice packs, and traction under supervision.
  • Instruct patients on the proper use of wheelchairs, crutches, braces, and prosthetic devices.
  • Administer traction to relieve neck and back pain using appropriate equipment.
  • Instruct, motivate, and assist patients in learning and improving functional activities.
  • Observe patients during treatments and compile and evaluate data on their responses and progress, reporting to the physical therapist.
  • Fit, adjust, and train patients in the use and care of orthopedic braces, prostheses, and supportive devices.
  • Confer with physical therapy staff and other health team members to discuss and evaluate patient information for treatment planning.
  • Coordinate with other departments and clinic staff to provide complete patient care.
  • Ensure the upkeep of the physical therapy clinic, adhering to infection control standards and tracking supply availability.
  • Schedule patients based on the Physical Therapist's plan of care and perform supplemental administrative duties as needed.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree from a CAPTE accredited college or university.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a physical therapy assistant or certification as a physical therapy assistant/technician by APTA.
  • One year of experience as a Physical Therapy Assistant after graduation.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated with minimal oversight.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure and handle stress.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a military or clinical setting.
  • Knowledge of joint commission standards and infection control practices.
