About the position

The Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves providing physical therapy services to both outpatients and inpatients under the guidance of a licensed physical therapist. This role is open to candidates at various levels, from entry-level to journey-level, and requires ongoing support and clinical direction from experienced staff. PTAs will perform assessments, implement treatment plans, and assist patients in improving their functional activities, with a focus on evidence-based practices.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preliminary chart reviews including medical history and contraindications for treatment.
  • Obtain appropriate subjective history and demonstrate the ability to interpret information gained through subjective history.
  • Treat patients through basic exercise, massage, modalities, gait, and balance training and other therapeutic interventions.
  • Recommend changes in treatment based on changes in physical, mental, and/or medical status of the patient.
  • Instruct, motivate, and assist patients to learn and improve functional activities.
  • Participate with the physical therapist in planning and implementing treatment programs for patients with a variety of diagnoses.
  • Independently use objective measures to assess progress in accordance with the plan of care for complex patient cases.
  • Identify critical changes in patient conditions to determine their medical and functional status.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must have an Associate degree from an accredited physical therapy assistant education program or equivalent qualifications.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted license as a PTA in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the U.S.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
