About the position

The Physician Assistant (PA) position at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) focuses on providing patient-centered care in the gastroenterology (GI) section. This role involves administrative responsibilities, direct patient care, and support for educational and research activities within the department. The PA will work under the supervision of a designated physician and is expected to maintain clinical privileges and licensure while actively engaging in patient care and clinic needs.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care in the gastroenterology section.
• Assist in reviewing and triaging routine GI consults as needed.
• Maintain a designated clinic for clinical evaluations and treatment plans under supervision.
• Inform patients of biopsy results when the GI staff endoscopist is unavailable.
• Transcribe routine prescriptions and refill GI medications as needed.
• Educate patients about their endoscopic procedures and obtain informed consent.
• Discuss procedure results with patients and provide post-procedural education.
• Coordinate care resulting from procedural findings, including new diagnoses of malignancy.
• Perform elastography of the liver using FibroScan® and document results in CPRS.
• Engage in teaching and supervision of trainees as needed.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Graduate of an accredited PA training program.
• Must have a Master's degree or a Bachelor's degree with one year of PA experience.
• Certification by passing the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE).
• Must possess an active, unrestricted license to practice as a PA in the U.S.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
