About the position

The position involves performing outpatient office visits, which include new patients, routine follow-ups, and acute care. The candidate will be responsible for ordering and interpreting lab and radiology results, formulating a medical plan of care according to established protocols, and managing daily medical care for inpatients in collaboration with a physician. Additionally, the role includes rounding on hospitalized patients, performing admission history and physicals, and conducting discharge planning functions, including family case conferences and dictating discharge summaries. The candidate will also perform pre-procedural evaluations and provide answers to questions related to GI procedures, such as bowel preparation, anti-coagulation therapy, and dietary recommendations. Coordination of patient care and follow-up for gastroenterology patients is essential, as well as ensuring that proper equipment and supplies are available for procedural cases. The candidate will evaluate new patients, complete history and physical exams, and assist in formulating treatment plans in collaboration with the physician. Other responsibilities include triaging patients over the phone, handling prescription refills, reviewing ancillary reports, providing patient education, and coordinating procedural scheduling for maximum efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates post-procedural patients and routine follow-up visits.
  • Sees same-day patients when required.
  • Triages new and existing patients over the phone.
  • Returns patient phone calls.
  • Handles prescription refills.
  • Reviews ancillary reports with the physicians.
  • Provides appropriate patient education.
  • Reviews gastroenterology-related studies with patients and physicians to formulate treatment plans.
  • Reviews diagnostic imaging with the physician to formulate treatment plans.
  • Coordinates procedural scheduling to ensure maximum efficiency in the physician's schedule.
  • Performs other functions as required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a program for physician assistants or nurse practitioners approved by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) of the American Medical Association.
  • Baccalaureate degree or two (2) years working experience as a Certified Physician Assistant or nurse practitioner.
  • One to three years' experience in gastroenterology preferred.
