About the position

The Physician Assistant in Hand & Plastic Surgery at Boston Medical Center is responsible for providing comprehensive medical services under the supervision of a physician. This role includes evaluating and treating patients, performing diagnostic studies, assisting in surgeries, and ensuring effective communication among healthcare teams. The position is integral to the multidisciplinary Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery, emphasizing the importance of both clinical and operating room experience.

Responsibilities

  • Admits, evaluates, treats, and discharges patients in collaboration with attending physicians.
  • Performs and interprets routine diagnostic studies, including laboratory procedures and radiological studies.
  • Makes rounds to evaluate patients and writes progress reports.
  • Performs therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, and wound care.
  • Acts as a liaison for patients requiring continuing care with their primary care or referring physician.
  • Facilitates communication with other departments to ensure efficient patient care.
  • Educates patients and families about preventive care and medical treatments.
  • Records and maintains accurate and confidential patient medical records.
  • Transcribes preoperative and postoperative orders under the attending physician's countersignature.
  • May write appropriate prescription orders as necessary.
  • Ensures compliance with NCQA and TJC standards and federal/state regulations.
  • Attends weekly staff meetings and participates in professional development activities.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct.
  • Follows established infection control and safety procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (scientific field preferred) and graduation from an AMA-approved Physician Assistant Program.
  • Nationally Board Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Licensed as a Physician Assistant in Massachusetts.
  • Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration if prescribing medications.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior experience in a surgical or plastic surgery setting.
