About the position

The Physician Assistant role at Allegheny Health Network involves identifying and managing medical and surgical problems within the PA's scope of practice in a surgical setting, which includes both operating room (OR) and clinic responsibilities. The position requires comprehensive patient care, including obtaining medical histories, performing physical exams, assisting in surgeries, and educating patients and families about health and treatment options.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains complete medical history and physical data on patients.
  • Performs physical exams, documents in the medical record, orders appropriate laboratory & diagnostic procedures, and establishes presumptive diagnosis as defined in the written agreement with supervising physician(s).
  • Assists in the OR by serving as first or second assistant during surgical procedures.
  • Provides appropriate patient care including completing daily patient care rounds on surgical patients, recording medical history and physical assessment, developing therapeutic care plans, ordering diagnostic tests, interpreting test results, discharge planning, and providing accurate medical record documentation.
  • Communicates with attending physician regarding plan of care and involves physician in clinical decision making for issues outside the PA's knowledge base or scope of practice.
  • Educates patients and family members regarding health and illness prevention, medication and treatment instructions, and recommends community resources as needed.
  • Prepares written prescription orders for drugs as defined in the written agreement with supervising physician(s).
  • Triages patient telephone calls.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

  • Minimum BA/BS Degree in Physician Assistant Studies.
  • Current PA Physician Assistant License Board eligible.
  • PA-C required or board eligible (License and certification required within 90 days of employment).
  • Ongoing successful recertification (NCCPA) as a PA-C.
  • CPR - American Heart Association certification required.
  • Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate.
  • Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate.
  • Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate.

Nice-to-haves

  • ACLS certification preferred.
  • 1-3 years' experience preferred.
