About the position

The Associate Chief of Staff (ACOS) for Specialty Care Service at the Montana VA Health Care System is a full-time supervisory role that combines administrative responsibilities with direct patient care. The ACOS is accountable for overseeing the operations of the Specialty Care Service, ensuring high-quality medical care, and managing a team of healthcare providers. This position reports directly to the Deputy Chief of Staff and is responsible for the performance and development of the Specialty Care team, including physicians and mid-level providers.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of Physicians, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Physician Assistants, and administrative staff in the Specialty Care Service.
  • Ensure 24/7 coverage of the Specialty Care Service and coordinate the Medical Officer of the Day (MOD) group.
  • Maintain necessary skills and certifications for patient care in an inpatient/acute care unit.
  • Complete ongoing professional practice evaluations and performance evaluations for staff under supervision.
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and professional standards for Specialty Care Service operations.
  • Assess service line needs and lead resource requests for the Specialty Care Service.
  • Oversee performance improvement, quality assurance, and utilization review to enhance care delivery.
  • Serve on interdisciplinary boards and committees as appointed by the Chief of Staff.
  • Support safety and infection control practices relevant to the position.
  • Provide direct patient care as a practicing physician within the specialty.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. state or territory.
  • Completion of residency training in an accredited core specialty training program.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Physician administrative leadership experience.
  • At least two years as a physician in a hospital or specialty medicine environment.
  • Supervisory experience.
