About the position

The Associate Chief of Staff (ACOS) for Specialty Care at the Montana VA Health Care System is a full-time supervisory role that combines administrative responsibilities with direct patient care. The ACOS is accountable for overseeing the operations of the Specialty Care Service, ensuring high-quality medical care, and managing a team of healthcare providers. This position requires strong leadership skills to coordinate and supervise various medical services while maintaining compliance with professional standards and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of physicians, advanced practice registered nurses, physician assistants, and administrative staff in the Specialty Care Service.
  • Ensure physician staffing requirements for 24/7 coverage of the Specialty Care Service are met.
  • Coordinate and supervise the Medical Officer of the Day (MOD) group for weekend and holiday coverage.
  • Conduct ongoing professional practice evaluations (OPPE) and focused professional practice evaluations (FPPE) for staff under supervision.
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and professional standards to guide Specialty Care Service operations.
  • Assess service line needs and lead the development of resource requests for the Specialty Care Service.
  • Oversee performance improvement, quality assurance, and utilization review to enhance care delivery.
  • Serve on interdisciplinary boards and committees as appointed by the Chief of Staff.
  • Maintain current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and serve as a practicing physician within the specialty.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. state or territory.
  • Completion of residency training in an accredited core specialty training program leading to board certification eligibility.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Physician administrative leadership experience, preferably two years in a hospital or specialty medicine environment.
  • Supervisory experience in a medical setting.
