About the position

The Chief of Staff (COS) at the Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks (VHSO) is a senior management role responsible for ensuring high-quality, cost-effective care and overseeing medical staff development. The COS will lead clinical services, maintain relationships with affiliated medical schools, and ensure compliance with regulations while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and patient safety.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain accepted clinical and management practices throughout clinical services.
  • Ensure confidentiality of patients and maintain competence and interpersonal skills.
  • Examine patients thoroughly using appropriate clinical, laboratory, and other pertinent data when necessary.
  • Interpret and evaluate clinical data for diagnosis and clinical status.
  • Initiate appropriate and timely treatment for patients.
  • Recognize changes in patient behavior, symptoms, and signs, modifying treatment plans as needed.
  • Mentor medical staff providers, independent practitioners, and allied health staff.
  • Plan educational activities to meet performance measures and accreditation standards.
  • Evaluate staff needs for continuing education and ensure compliance with mandatory requirements.
  • Oversee educational and research activities of clinical services and the healthcare system.
  • Encourage staff to identify research problems and conduct relevant literature searches.
  • Assure excellent standards of patient care and maintain accreditation processes.
  • Interact effectively with professional schools and the medical community.
  • Develop and implement policies to enhance accessibility for Veterans.
  • Present budgetary requirements for clinical services and assist in forming the annual budget.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state or territory.
  • Completion of residency training in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification eligibility.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Minimum of two years successful management experience as a Chief of Staff or Deputy Chief of Staff in a VHA Health Care System.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with facility and VISN level leadership.
  • Experience coordinating interdisciplinary services across large demographic areas.
  • Experience developing and executing strategic plans and initiatives.
  • Board Certification preferred.
