About the position

The incumbent serves as the Director of Primary Care Operations for the National Primary Care Office, Office of Clinical Services (11PC), Veterans Health Administration. The National Primary Care Office provides national oversight and monitoring of primary care delivery and develops policies and programs to direct clinical operations, research, and educational program activities. This position is critical in ensuring that the primary care delivery model is effectively implemented across the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities, enhancing the quality of care provided to veterans. The Director will work closely with various stakeholders to ensure that the integrated care team model is operationalized and that legislative mandates related to health care delivery are met. The role requires a strong leader who can provide strategic direction and guidance to primary care field clinic operations, ensuring that the highest standards of care are maintained. The Director will also be responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of policies that govern primary care practices within the VA, ensuring compliance with federal regulations and standards. This position is full-time and is located in Washington, DC, with a work schedule of Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The incumbent will be expected to travel up to 25% of the time to various VA facilities to monitor operations and provide support as needed. This is a temporary appointment, not to exceed one year, but there is potential for extension or conversion to a permanent position depending on organizational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Director of Primary Care Operations for the National Primary Care Office.
  • Provide strategic direction and leadership related to primary care field clinic operations.
  • Oversee the national implementation of the primary care delivery model and integrated care team model.
  • Develop and implement policies governing primary care practices within the VA.
  • Ensure compliance with legislative mandates related to health care delivery programs.
  • Monitor and evaluate primary care delivery across VA facilities to ensure quality of care.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to enhance primary care services for veterans.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • 3 years of supervisory experience in a Primary Care setting.
  • Board certified physician.
  • Experience leading or serving on a national board, committee, or workgroup.
  • 3 years of experience providing direct patient care in the Primary Care setting.
  • Experience in systems redesign.
