About the position

The Physician (Hospitalist/Nocturnist) position at the VA Northern Arizona Healthcare System involves providing comprehensive medical care to veterans in the Acute Care Medical Unit. The role requires performing thorough patient assessments, managing inpatient care, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure high-quality healthcare delivery. The hospitalist will work independently and as part of a team, responding to medical emergencies and participating in quality improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate and comprehensive history and physical examinations for patients admitted to the Acute Care Medical Unit.
  • Perform routine daytime care for medical inpatients and make rounds on weekends and holidays.
  • Respond to and be part of the Rapid Response Team when a Medical Officer of the Day is not on site.
  • Document all clinical encounters at the time of visit and maintain thorough patient records.
  • Initiate diagnostic modalities and stabilize medical therapies during emergencies.
  • Maintain and revise medical care plans and ensure timely completion of consult requests.
  • Practice within the scope of practice and assure necessary consultations occur.
  • Build collaborative relationships and resolve conflicts effectively.
  • Support VHA initiatives and identify opportunities to improve care quality and access for veterans.
  • Promote safety and complete accident reports as required.
  • Represent VHA programs professionally and focus on organizational needs.
  • Complete continuing professional education to maintain licensure and stay current in the field.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities for the assigned service line.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted medical license in a U.S. state or territory.
  • Completion of residency training in an accredited core specialty program.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Board certification in a relevant specialty (not mandatory but preferred).
  • Experience in a hospitalist role or similar inpatient care setting.
