About the position

The Neurologist position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves diagnosing and treating acute and chronic neurologic care problems. The role requires the physician to coordinate activities of other health service personnel, prescribe medications and treatments, and maintain professional knowledge and skills to provide effective care to patients. The Neurologist will spend approximately 90% of their time on patient care and 10% on administrative duties, ensuring high standards of medical services and education for staff.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and treat acute and chronic neurologic care problems.
  • Coordinate activities of other health service personnel.
  • Prescribe medications and treatments for patients.
  • Provide neurological services in hospitalized, extended care, and outpatient settings.
  • Design diagnostic and therapeutic plans to meet patient needs.
  • Perform lumbar punctures, EMG, and nerve conduction studies.
  • Screen outpatient neurology consults for appropriateness and collaborate with referring providers.
  • Participate in educational activities to stay current with community standards.
  • Provide consultation to other clinical staff regarding medical services.
  • Comply with patient-centered care functions and organizational ethics.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from an approved institution.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state or territory.
  • Completion of residency training in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
