About the position

The position involves performing waived and moderate clinical laboratory procedures, specifically complete blood counts (CBCs), under minimal to moderate supervision. The role includes collecting laboratory samples through venipuncture and/or fingerstick, processing these samples, and preparing them for transport to a reference laboratory. The individual will review test results and promptly notify healthcare providers or nursing staff of any issues or concerns. Familiarity with regulations from inspecting bodies such as CLIA and OSHA is essential, and adherence to these regulations is required. The position also entails performing and documenting quality assessment activities, troubleshooting equipment as needed, and training others in routine procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the urgency of tests and prioritize tasks accordingly.
  • Prepare specimens for testing and verify patient identification on samples and test requisitions.
  • Apply rules of specimen rejection and arrange for recollection when necessary.
  • Use and maintain equipment and instruments for testing, document quality controls, and maintain cleanliness of the work area.
  • Prepare reagents as required for test performance.
  • Calculate, report, and record test results, analyzing them for critical values and reporting immediately.
  • Oversee and participate in Quality Assessment activities, documenting problem recognition and resolution.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience performing moderately complex laboratory testing required.
  • Experience with complete blood counts (CBCs) is necessary.
  • Clinical training in phlebotomy, medical office assisting, nursing, and radiology preferred.
