About the position

The Physician (Psychiatrist) position at the Department of Veterans Affairs is focused on providing comprehensive psychiatric care to Veterans within the Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (RRTP). The role involves direct patient care, including assessments, treatment planning, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to ensure integrated care for patients with complex psychiatric conditions. The psychiatrist will also have the authority to prescribe medications, including Suboxone for substance use disorders, and will be responsible for the documentation and compliance with facility policies.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care including comprehensive psychiatric assessment and diagnostic services for Veterans.
  • Treats substance use disorders, including providing Suboxone treatment.
  • Educates patients and family members regarding mental disorders and treatment approaches.
  • Assesses Veterans' imminent risk of harm to self and/or others and facilitates hospitalizations as necessary.
  • Orders, monitors, and responds to laboratory and radiological assessments.
  • Initiates appropriate healthcare consults and referrals for direct-care patients.
  • Consults with healthcare providers about assessment findings and treatment plans.
  • Develops, implements, and documents mental health treatment plans for patients.
  • Complies with documentation requirements and standards for timely completion of Electronic Health Record (EHR) notes.
  • Adheres to facility policies for delivering direct patient care, including risk assessment and mitigation practices.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. state or territory.
  • Completion of residency training in an accredited core specialty program.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Board certification in psychiatry is preferred.
  • Experience in treating substance use disorders is a plus.
