About the position

The Associate Chief of Staff (ACOS) for the Diagnostic Imaging Service (DIS) at the US Veterans Health Administration is a pivotal role that encompasses both administrative and clinical responsibilities. This position is designed for a physician who will provide leadership, management, and oversight of the DIS, ensuring that the service meets the operational requirements and adheres to the standards set by the Veterans Affairs (VA). The ACOS will collaborate in the development and maintenance of policies and procedures that define the operational framework for DIS, actively participating in management meetings to discuss performance metrics and quality of care. The role requires a commitment to outstanding customer service, as the ACOS will be responsible for addressing patient inquiries and ensuring favorable outcomes for both patients and the organization. In addition to administrative duties, the ACOS will also engage in direct patient care as part of an inter-professional Radiology team. This includes performing radiology interpretations, ordering diagnostic studies, and participating in team meetings to discuss patient management. The incumbent will be expected to adapt to changing circumstances while demonstrating strong interpersonal skills. The position requires a comprehensive understanding of the operational and clinical aspects of diagnostic imaging, as well as the ability to analyze and improve existing programs and services within the DIS. The ACOS will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with regulatory and accrediting body requirements, making strategic recommendations to the Chief of Staff, and overseeing the onboarding and management of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine operations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, management, and oversight of providers and programs supporting DIS.
  • Collaborate in the development and maintenance of written policies and procedures for DIS.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled DIS management meetings.
  • Monitor DIS performance and assess adherence to VA standards.
  • Conduct, monitor, and maintain OPPEs and FPPEs for radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians.
  • Develop and monitor performance/outcome metrics and conduct analysis of existing DIS programs and services.
  • Make recommendations to the Chief of Staff for program's strategic direction and productivity.
  • Ensure DIS programs are compliant with all regulatory and accrediting body requirements.
  • Respond to patient inquiries and ensure outstanding customer service.
  • Evaluate and determine courses of action for favorable patient or organizational outcomes.
  • Work with leadership to prioritize, implement, onboard, manage operations, and terminate Radiology and nuclear medicine operations as appropriate.
  • Provide direct outpatient care as a member of an inter-professional Radiology team.
  • Perform radiology interpretations/readings and order diagnostic studies.
  • Participate in inter-professional focused patient chart reviews and team meetings.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a US State or territory.
  • Completion of residency training in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Five years of experience practicing as a Diagnostic Radiologist, Interventional Radiologist, or Nuclear Medicine Physician is preferred.
  • Experience as an Associate Chief of Staff or Deputy Associate Chief of Staff for Diagnostic Imaging is a plus.
