About the position

The Physician position in the Hematology Oncology Department of Veterans Affairs is a full-time role focused on managing complex medical hematology and oncology care for Veterans. The role involves patient screening, management of hematologic and oncologic diseases, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality care. The position also includes responsibilities for education and supervision of trainees, maintaining electronic medical records, and participating in quality improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Manage complex medical hematology and oncology care for Veterans.
  • Provide patient screening and management of hematologic/oncologic diseases per National and VA guidelines.
  • Maintain timely entry and use of the electronic medical record system for workload capture and review of medical care needs.
  • Provide education and supervision of trainees/Fellows.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to ensure safety and quality of Veteran care.
  • Responsible for all performance metrics related to quality of patient care.
  • Demonstrate positive customer service and respect in all aspects of patient care.
  • Participate in quality improvement, quality assurance, and continuous survey readiness initiatives.
  • Maintain licensures and certifications requisite for credentials and privileges at the OKC VAHCS.
  • Demonstrate ethical and professional behavioral standards per Medical Staff Bylaws.
  • Participate in an independent research program according to the needs of the Service Line.
  • Foster courteous and respectful treatment of patients of varied cultures, backgrounds, ages, and customs.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine from an approved school.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or Commonwealth.
  • Completion of residency training in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Must be board eligible or board certified in medical oncology; board eligible or certified in hematology is desired.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with previous or current faculty appointments that encompassed teaching of Fellows.
  • Experience with scientific research projects.
