About the position

The Pipe Layer position involves laying pipe for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, and water mains, while performing various physical labor tasks at construction sites. The role requires operating hand and power tools, preparing sites, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. The Pipe Layer will work under the supervision of the Project Superintendent and may assist other craft workers.

Responsibilities

  • Lays pipe for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, and water mains.
  • Operates a variety of equipment including pavement breakers, jackhammers, and concrete mixers.
  • Checks slopes for conformation to requirements using levels or lasers.
  • Covers pipes with earth or other materials.
  • Connects pipe pieces and seals joints using welding equipment, cement, or glue.
  • Cuts pipes to required lengths.
  • Installs and repairs sanitary and storm water sewer structures and pipe systems.
  • Grades and levels trench bases using tamping machines and hand tools.
  • Lays out pipe routes following written instructions or blueprints.
  • Aligns and positions pipes to prepare them for welding or sealing.
  • Digs trenches to desired or required depths, by hand or using trenching tools.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in construction/site development.
  • Must have a journeyman pipe layer's license or be in the process of obtaining one.
  • Mathematical abilities for basic measurements and calculations.
  • Fluency in English (read, write, and speak).
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of solutions.
  • Must be alert and aware of surroundings.
  • Active listening skills to understand and engage with others.
  • Ability to select and use appropriate training methods and procedures.
  • Skill in active learning to understand implications of new information.
  • Ability to determine the kind of tools and equipment needed for a job.
  • Conduct tests and inspections to evaluate quality or performance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with heavy earth moving equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations in construction.
