About the position

The Piping Designer III at CDI Corporation is responsible for performing routine and moderately complex design assignments in the energy and chemicals industries. This role requires proficiency in basic drafting techniques and CAD software, with a focus on safety and quality in engineering design. The designer will work under minimal supervision to create CADD drawings, prepare engineering and construction drawings, and coordinate with other disciplines on projects.

Responsibilities

  • Develops CADD drawings from design sketches or catalog information under minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrates a continuing consciousness of safety in daily activities and implements it in work designed.
  • Prepares moderately complex engineering and construction drawings from scratch, sketches, or verbal instructions using manual or computer-assisted drafting/design techniques.
  • Marks up works in progress for others to draft or CADD.
  • Performs related fundamental engineering support tasks such as updating computer lists, filing prints, distributing drawings, making simple calculations, proofreading reports, and compiling Bills of Material.
  • Communicates the design process with assigned discipline and coordinates work with other disciplines on assigned projects.
  • Checks basic layouts, designs, and general arrangements of other designers and drafters for accuracy and compliance with code and company client standards.
  • Utilizes information from vendor prints, catalogs, technical manuals, etc., to perform design work.
  • Ensures field notes are neatly arranged, accurate, and complete.
  • Creates sketches that are readable and include all pertinent dimensions, notes, and job numbers.
  • Uses time efficiently and promptly acts on established goals, understanding constructive advice and adjusting to changing directions.
  • Performs tasks aware of schedule requirements and coordinates assigned work to support all customers.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of progress and ensures quality assurance for personal work assignments.
  • Supports field assignments as required and independently undertakes actions or makes recommendations when potential problems are discovered.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write detailed correspondence and effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations and compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
  • Knowledge of algebra and basic trigonometry is required.
  • Proficiency in 2D & 3D CAD software and basic drafting techniques.
