About the position

The Planetary Assembly & Gear Design Release Engineer at Ford is responsible for the design and release of planetary assemblies and gear components for current and future transmission models, including hybrid and battery electric vehicles (BEVs). This role involves collaboration with various teams to ensure quality, cost-effectiveness, and timely delivery of engineering objectives while managing the entire design process from concept to production.

Responsibilities

  • Design and release gears, carriers, bearings, pinion shafts, thrust washers, and other components for planetary and layshaft gear designs.
  • Collaborate with systems engineering teams, manufacturing plants, and component suppliers to meet program objectives for quality, cost, weight, durability, and NVH.
  • Work with CAD/CAE, manufacturing engineering, and suppliers to deliver optimized designs and assess manufacturing feasibility.
  • Develop, track, and update engineering quality documents such as DFMEA, DVP&R, P-Diagram, and Boundary Diagram.
  • Lead component and assembly release in Ford's engineering release system.
  • Plan and manage prototype parts ordering and component/system level testing.
  • Analyze warranty/test hardware to identify root causes of failure and define corrective actions using 8D tools/methods.
  • Benchmark, identify, and implement current model quality and cost reduction actions.
  • Actively work with suppliers to support program deliverables related to PPAP and APQP.

Requirements

  • BS in mechanical engineering or a similar discipline.
  • 2 years of engineering experience as a mechanical component engineer, including internships and co-op.

Nice-to-haves

  • Practical experience using commercial gear design/analysis software.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and quality management processes/tools.
  • Experience performing failure analysis of mechanical systems and components.
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma principles and experience using Minitab or similar statistical analysis tool.
  • Working knowledge of CAD/CAE tools, AutoCAD & MatLab.
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing processes, metallurgy, and heat treatment of steel.
  • Basic understanding of NVH and ability to read/interpreting NVH data.
  • Strong engineering, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Working knowledge of MS Excel, Word & PowerPoint.
