About the position
The Planner/Estimator (Work Item Specification Writer) is responsible for writing work specifications, conducting ship checks, and estimating labor, material, and subcontractor work for U.S. Navy ship repair, alterations, and modifications. This role requires a thorough understanding of ship construction and systems, as well as the ability to assess ship conditions and develop detailed work items in compliance with Navy standards.
Responsibilities
- Conduct ship checks to assess material condition and determine scope of work required.
- Research ship drawings and technical manuals to validate work notifications.
- Identify repair and modification requirements and order necessary materials.
- Develop work items/specifications in accordance with Joint Fleet Maintenance Manual (JFMM) 4-E requirements.
- Utilize NAVSEA instructions and pertinent NAVSEA Standard Items for work item development.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Knowledge of U.S. Navy ship construction and shipboard systems, particularly structural systems.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Experience with Navy Maintenance Database (NMD) and related application programs.
- Eight years of Navy-related experience with structural, mechanical, or electrical systems.
Nice-to-haves
- A Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering or science field or ten years of experience in Naval Marine Engineering.
- Trade Journeyman work experience or US Navy experience in Naval Repair Facility or Commercial Shipyard.
