About the position

The Montgomery County Department of Parks is seeking a Park Planner III/IV to serve as the Development Review Coordinator. This role involves leading and coordinating the department's involvement in the development application process, ensuring that park needs are met while minimizing impacts from development. The position requires strong communication skills, project management abilities, and experience with the Montgomery County development process.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and lead Montgomery Parks' involvement in the development application process.
  • Represent Montgomery Parks on the Development Review Committee.
  • Review and analyze development applications to ensure park needs are met.
  • Negotiate with developers and other departments for optimal outcomes.
  • Present and defend park planning recommendations to the Planning Board.
  • Participate in or lead community meetings.
  • Create visually compelling presentations for various audiences.
  • Provide written content for plans, staff reports, and community master plans.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Planning, Geography, Architecture, Parks and Recreation, or related field.
  • Four years of progressively responsible professional level planning experience for Planner III; six years for Planner IV.
  • Valid driver's license in accordance with State and Commission rules.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to coordinate teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Planning, Public Administration, Landscape Architecture, or related field.
  • Professional planning or landscape architecture certification (AICP/APA, PLA/ASLA).
  • Experience with ePlans and appearing before the Planning Board.
  • Familiarity with Montgomery County Code, Zoning Ordinance, and various Master Plans.
