About the position

Oceaneering Aerospace and Defense Technologies (AdTech) is seeking a Planner/Technical Writer II to join our Production Engineering department in Chesapeake, VA. This role is pivotal in developing Task Group Instructions (TGIs) to support various submarine maintenance availabilities. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in technical writing and documentation, particularly in military and engineering contexts. The position requires proficiency in preparing and reviewing technical materials for publication in both paper and electronic formats. The documentation to be developed includes TGIs, various required support enclosures, Objective Quality Evidence (OQE), and Reference Documents with Technical Variance Data (TVD). Daily tasks will involve the use of technical manuals, equipment manuals, operating and maintenance instructions/manuals, database entry, parts lists, assembly instructions, reports, and appendices. The successful candidate will utilize the ATIS (Advanced Technical Information Support) software daily for research and development of TGIs. In this role, you will be responsible for completing the planner qualification card and demonstrating proficiency in researching and developing technical work documents (TGIs) for the restoration and repair of various shipboard components. This will involve reviewing applicable drawings and references, as well as ensuring familiarity with Navy Standard Items and various quality assurance manuals. You will conduct necessary research, including reading source material and collaborating with subject matter experts (SMEs) to develop TGIs. Additionally, you will be responsible for maintaining the master database of TGIs and providing mentorship to new or junior planners. The position requires strong research abilities and the capability to interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, and specifications to determine task requirements. You will also be expected to develop and present training to planning teams and perform all essential duties of a planner with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Develop Task Group Instructions (TGIs) to support submarine maintenance availabilities.
  • Prepare and review technical materials for publication in both paper and electronic formats.
  • Conduct research using ATIS software and collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) in TGI development.
  • Interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, and specifications to determine task requirements.
  • Maintain the master database of TGIs for task assignment and status updates.
  • Provide mentorship to new/junior planners and develop training for planning teams.
  • Complete the planner qualification card and demonstrate proficiency in technical writing and documentation.

Requirements

  • 5 years of experience in various trades with vocational courses in pipefitting, plumbing, or hydraulic systems practice and theory.
  • High School diploma or GED with an Apprenticeship Diploma or 5 years military and/or civilian experience with Naval Submarine systems repair.
  • Five years' experience in writing maintenance, operations, and troubleshooting procedures (TGIs, FWPs, CWPs).
  • In-depth knowledge of Submarine HM&E systems and Combat Systems (VLS and torpedo stowage).
  • Experience with technical documentation development and editing for both commercial and military customers.
  • Ability to obtain Secret or Confidential security clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with Government publication standards for specifications and manuals.
  • Knowledge of SS800-AG-MAN-010/P-9290, System Certification Procedures And Criteria Manual for Deep Submergence Systems.
  • Experience with AIM work breakdown.
