About the position

The Planning, Design and Construction Project Manager - Architect at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) is responsible for managing capital projects from concept to completion, with a primary focus on the planning, design, and construction administration phases. This role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including planning, design, review of construction documents, bidding, award, and construction administration as needed. The Project Manager will also play a crucial role in supporting NYBG's Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility initiatives, contributing to the development and maintenance of an inclusive organizational culture throughout the institution. In this position, the Project Manager will manage and provide general assistance in various aspects of project management, including planning and programming, design, bidding, budget preparation, scheduling, and managing construction projects. The role requires coordination and interaction with NYBG staff, architects, engineers, contractors, construction managers, consultants, and public agencies. On-site inspection and direction of construction are essential components of the job, ensuring close observation of all project aspects from initiation to completion. The Project Manager will also be responsible for the management and coordination of consultants and contractors, assisting the Senior Project Manager, AVP for Capital Projects, and Vice President for Capital Projects as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Manage capital projects from concept to completion, focusing on planning, design, and construction administration phases.
  • Provide general assistance in planning and programming, design, bidding, budget preparation, scheduling, and managing construction projects.
  • Coordinate and interact with NYBG staff, architects, engineers, contractors, construction managers, consultants, and public agencies.
  • Conduct on-site inspections and provide direction for construction, ensuring close observation of all project aspects.
  • Manage and coordinate consultants and contractors as needed.
  • Assist the Senior Project Manager, AVP for Capital Projects, and Vice President for Capital Projects as required.

Requirements

  • Licensed Architect preferred, with a focus on technical skills including materials, utilities, and infrastructure.
  • Minimum 8 years of full-time experience in design and construction project management work.
  • Experience in designing and executing small-scale in-house design projects and managing consultant teams for large projects.
  • Experience with public facilities and cultural institutions preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and bid documents, with knowledge of Design and Construction Contracting.
  • Thorough understanding of Construction Practices with construction phase experience, including submittal and drawing review processes.
  • Excellent communication skills, including verbal, graphic, and written communication.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, interpersonal, and collaborative skills.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects and deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite, Photoshop, Illustrator, In-Design, and Adobe Acrobat software.
