About the position

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) is seeking a full-time Planning Engineer to join its Transmission Integration department. This role is pivotal in managing the efficient flow of electricity across New York State's extensive high-voltage transmission lines, which span over 11,000 circuit-miles. The Planning Engineer will be part of a dynamic team responsible for conducting studies that evaluate the reliability, economic, and regulatory impacts of transmission projects proposed through the Public Policy Transmission Planning Process. The analyses performed by the Planning Engineers are crucial for supporting the development of transmission infrastructure necessary for achieving a reliable and efficient transition to a 100% emission-free grid by 2040. In this position, the Planning Engineer will engage in various planning studies to assess the technical performance of proposed transmission projects. This includes performing power flow studies to analyze the impact of these projects on the NYISO system through steady state, stability, and transfer analyses. The role requires collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders to effectively communicate technical methods and study results. Additionally, the Planning Engineer will present technical findings to the Planning team, other NYISO departments, and stakeholders, ensuring that all parties are informed and engaged in the planning process.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in planning studies to evaluate the technical performance of transmission projects proposed in the Public Policy Transmission Planning Process.
  • Perform power flow studies to analyze the impact of the transmission projects on the NYISO system using steady state, stability, and transfer analyses.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to communicate technical methods and study results.
  • Present technical findings within the Planning team, other NYISO departments, as well as to stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (BS) in Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, or Applied Science desired but not required.
  • Two years of related experience in areas such as power system planning, energy policy analysis, power plant operations, energy and/or energy economic modeling required.
  • Proficiency in the use of advanced power flow and transient stability applications software (PTI PSS/E, PSS/MUST, GE PSLF, or PowerGem TARA) to perform system studies is desired.
  • Experience with production cost tools (e.g. MAPS, Plexos, Aurora, UPLAN, GridView, PROMOD, etc) is highly desirable.
  • Experience with resource adequacy analysis software such as MARS, Plexos and/or SERVM is desired.
  • Proficiency in advanced data processing and handling techniques will be viewed favorably.
  • Previous experience with technical programming in MatLab, Python, or other data handling programming languages is desired.
  • Experience in detailed electrical design and engineering of transmission systems is desirable.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree (MS) desired.
  • Candidates who possess Associate level (less than 2 years of experience) or Senior level (seven years of experience) skills and qualifications are also encouraged to apply.

Benefits
