About the position

The Planning Technician I position is a full-time role focused on supporting the development and implementation of planning initiatives that comply with environmental regulations and meet community needs. The ideal candidate will engage with the public, conduct data analysis, and utilize planning software tools to facilitate various planning processes.

Responsibilities

  • Provides administrative support, including scheduling meetings, preparing agendas and minutes, and drafting general business correspondence.
  • Assists in responding to requests for information from other departments, agencies, and the general public, providing basic property information and interpreting the zoning ordinance.
  • Receives and processes various applications for planning approval and permits, including Boundary Line Adjustments, Single Family Residential, Non-SEPA Commercial, Multi Family, Industrial, Short Plat, Temporary Use Permits, and Signs.
  • Timely processing of City Business Licenses in coordination with Department staff and other agencies.
  • Conducts field surveys and compiles property research, including zoning history, size, dimensions, development patterns, and land use and property ownership.
  • Prepares written reports and correspondence, maintains records and files, and assists in the maintenance and updating of city databases.
  • Prepares reports and presentations for stakeholders, summarizing findings and recommendations.
  • Stays updated on environmental laws and regulations affecting planning processes.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • One year of business office experience.
  • One year of experience working in a planning-related capacity preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental law and its application in planning contexts.
  • Proficient in data collection methodologies and data analysis skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for effective stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment while managing multiple projects simultaneously.
