About the position

The Plant Controller plays a crucial role in providing financial support to the Snyder's-Lance jumbo manufacturing facility located in Charlotte, North Carolina. This position is essential for enhancing profitability and safeguarding all company assets through the enforcement of robust financial controls. The Plant Controller will direct and manage all financial functions for the Bakery operations, applying generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) to plant transactions to accurately reflect the financial performance of the facility. As a key business partner to the Plant Management team, the Plant Controller will contribute to the development of plant strategies and the execution of annual plans aimed at driving year-over-year improvements. This role involves leading the annual budgeting process, monthly forecasting, and the management accounting/reporting process. The Plant Controller will review and advise the management team on all financial and budgetary requirements, developing financial goals in partnership with both plant and corporate leadership. It is imperative that plant goals and initiatives align with the company's values, strategic goals, and business plans. The Plant Controller is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of standard costs, which includes overseeing the bill of materials, item costs, labor routings, labor rates, and overhead assignments. This role requires reporting variances to set standards in a manner that is understandable to supervisors and managers, and taking corrective action as necessary. The Plant Controller will also be accountable for the overall performance of the plant, explaining production variances on a monthly basis and participating in proactive measures to reduce variances from standard costs. Additionally, this position will provide financial leadership on all aspects of plant supply chain management, effectively communicating financial risks and opportunities to plant management and corporate. The role also involves reviewing control procedures over accounting and financial activities, providing guidance to ensure that internal accounting controls are in place to protect company assets, and maintaining compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) regulations. The Plant Controller will oversee the preparation of the plant's financial reporting, analyze and report on manufacturing efficiency variances, and ensure that all reporting is prepared in accordance with GAAP. Continuous engagement on the plant floor is expected to help supervisors understand standard costs and identify areas for improvement. The ability to prepare analyses to support new capital equipment investments, including understanding internal rate of return (IRR), payback, and net present value (NPV), is also a key responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Participate as a key business partner to the Plant Management team, contributing to plant strategy development and execution of annual plans that drive YoY improvements.
  • Direct and manage all financial and accounting functions for the plant.
  • Lead annual budgeting, monthly forecasting, and the management accounting/reporting process.
  • Review and advise the management team on all financial/budgetary requirements and develop financial goals in partnership with plant and corporate leadership.
  • Ensure that plant goals and initiatives are developed in line with company values, strategic goals, and business plans.
  • Responsible for the accuracy of the standard costs starting with the bill of materials and item costs, labor routings, labor rates, as well as overhead assignments.
  • Report variances to set standards in a manner that supervisors and managers can understand and take corrective action.
  • Accountable for the performance of the plant, explaining all production variances on a monthly basis and participating in proactive measures to reduce variances from standard cost.
  • Support plant/corporate Enabler (cost savings) programs toward driving YoY productivity improvements.
  • Provide financial leadership on all aspects of plant supply chain management.
  • Effectively communicate financial risks and opportunities to plant management and corporate.
  • Review control procedures over accounting and financial activities and provide guidance to ensure that internal accounting controls are in place to protect company assets.
  • Ensure an adequate system of internal control is maintained and that general ledger accounts are correctly stated, maintaining SOX compliance.
  • Oversee preparation of the plant's financial reporting and analyze and report manufacturing efficiency variances, determining corrective action requirements.
  • Continuously spend time on the plant floor working with supervisors to help them understand where they are missing standard costs.
  • Prepare analyses to support new capital equipment with a complete understanding of IRR, payback, and NPV of investments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting and a minimum of 5 years of direct experience in the field required.
  • Good working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Good understanding of process standard cost accounting.
  • Proven record of success as a strategically oriented financial manager with knowledge of cost accounting, production planning, and operations analysis.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to seek resources as needed.
  • Collaborative interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Results-oriented focus and approach.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access).
  • Ability to drive process improvement.
  • Very strong organizational and business process skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and work independently on a variety of assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Understanding of process flows and above-average understanding of process capabilities within their facilities.
  • Proactively identify continuous improvement opportunities and demonstrate intellectual curiosity.
  • SAP experience preferred; EPM knowledge is a plus.
