About the position

The Plant Controller plays a key role in helping to drive the organization to achieve strategic and plan objectives. This position is responsible for leading all aspects of the plant's finance activities, including general accounting, cost accounting, financial analysis, internal control, and audit. The Plant Controller will manage all company compliance, consolidation, and reporting to provide financial information to the company accurately and timely. This leadership role requires a detail-oriented professional with excellent analytical, planning, evaluation, and implementation skills. In addition to overseeing financial operations, the Plant Controller will establish and implement policies and procedures to identify, resolve, and document accounting issues. They will provide direction and strategic support to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of reporting processes. The role also involves leading, training, and developing a finance and accounting team to ensure effective leadership of the financial function. The ideal candidate must be intelligent, personable, dynamic, and innovative, with exceptional analytical skills and a proactive, hands-on approach to daily operations. The Plant Controller will direct and oversee the preparation of accurate and timely plant-level financial statements, department and activity reports, and financial position presentations. They will collaborate with Corporate Finance to analyze and recommend improvements to financial performance, reporting, and accounting policy. This position will also partner with business leaders to ensure that reporting aligns with their needs and goals, providing special reporting and financial training to non-financial leaders as necessary. Furthermore, the Plant Controller will guide financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures, protecting assets through internal controls, and maintaining accurate perpetual inventory records.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and oversee the preparation of accurate and timely plant-level financial statements, department and activity reports, and financial position presentations.
  • Collaborate with Corporate Finance to analyze and recommend improvements to financial performance, financial reporting, and accounting policy.
  • Partner with business leaders to ensure that reporting aligns with their needs and goals.
  • Provide special reporting and formal/informal financial training to non-financial leaders as needed.
  • Guide financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Protect assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls.
  • Maintain accurate perpetual inventory records.
  • Provide data and insights to department managers during the budgeting process.
  • Coordinate data required for the budgeting process and ensure reporting aligns with budget review processes throughout the year.
  • Prepare budgets by establishing schedules; collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data; recommending plans.
  • Achieve budget objectives by scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions.
  • Prepare special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Maintain accurate historical production reporting data.
  • Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department's goals and objectives.
  • Ensure timely transactions in accounts payable and accounts receivable.
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions, chart of accounts, and accounting filing system.
  • Maintain financial staff by selecting, orienting, and training employees.
  • Maintain financial staff job results by coaching and counseling employees, planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
  • Protect operations by keeping financial information and plans confidential.
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in accounting and finance, including supervisory experience.
  • Direct accounting and finance experience in a discrete and processing manufacturing environment, preferably in a medium-sized business setting.
  • Experience with JD Edwards preferred.
  • Proficiency with costing standards, cost systems, and variance analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with leadership teams to develop and execute strategy.
  • Experience working with Private Equity owned Portfolio Companies preferred.
  • Demonstrable experience with project management and process improvement.
  • CPA not required, but preferred.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
