About the position

The City of Durham's Department of Water Management (DWM) is seeking a dedicated Plant Operations Specialist (Wastewater Plant Operator - POI) to join our team. This full-time position plays a crucial role in ensuring the effective operation of our wastewater treatment facilities, which serve over 309,000 residents in Durham. The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring plant operations through physical observation of processes, sampling units to ensure proper operation, and maintaining accurate records. The role requires cleaning and calibrating process meters, monitoring chemical feeds, and making necessary process adjustments to ensure optimal performance. As a Plant Operations Specialist, you will assist in operating, adjusting, and maintaining equipment at assigned water or wastewater facilities. This includes monitoring physical plant operations, observing plant processes, and collecting and analyzing lab samples under close supervision. You will also be responsible for complying with work safety rules and procedures, performing minor repairs on plant equipment, and maintaining cleanliness in assigned work areas. Additionally, you will be tasked with receiving and unloading chemicals, maintaining records, logs, and databases, and ensuring the accuracy and completeness of documentation. This position requires a commitment to obtaining a Grade I Wastewater Treatment Operator's License within one year of hire and a Grade II Wastewater Treatment Operator's License within two years. The role may require working every other weekend and being available for stand-by/recall as needed. Responsibilities

  • Monitor plant operations through physical observation of processes.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED, HiSET, TASC).
  • Six months of related experience in a manufacturing, warehousing, utility facility, or general industry.
  • Must obtain a Grade I Wastewater Treatment Operator's License within one year of hire.
  • Must obtain a Grade II Wastewater Treatment Operator's License within two years of hire.
  • Valid, unrestricted North Carolina driver's license or willingness to obtain one within 60 days of hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Basic math and chemistry calculations to accurately read meters and charts.
  • Experience in making mixed arithmetic calculations involving whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.
