About the position

The Plant Operations Specialist position at the City of Durham is an entry-level role focused on the operation and maintenance of water treatment facilities. The specialist will work primarily at the Brown Water Treatment Plant and may assist at the Williams Water Treatment Plant as needed. This role is crucial for ensuring the delivery of safe drinking water to the community and involves various operational tasks, including monitoring equipment, maintaining records, and adhering to safety protocols. The position requires obtaining certification within one year of employment to continue in the role.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with operating, adjusting, and maintaining equipment at assigned water or wastewater facilities.
  • Monitor physical plant operations by observing plant processes.
  • Monitor chemical feeds and collect lab samples under close supervision.
  • Clean and perform minor repairs on plant equipment and assigned work areas.
  • Maintain records, logs, databases, and documentation related to plant operations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED, HiSET, TASC).
  • Six months of related experience in water/wastewater treatment or vocational education.
  • Valid, unrestricted North Carolina driver's license or ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
  • Basic math and chemistry skills for reading meters and interpreting readings.
  • Ability to obtain NC Grade C Surface Water Treatment Certification within one year of start date.
