About the position

The Plant Operator - Water Production position at Clayton County Water Authority is responsible for producing high-quality potable water by monitoring and managing the water treatment process at an assigned facility. This entry-level role involves close supervision and aims to ensure compliance with state and federal environmental protection standards while maintaining optimal water storage levels. Operators will gain essential skills in various operational tasks, including chemical testing, equipment maintenance, and water quality monitoring.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and analyze operating and processing conditions at the water treatment plant.
  • Assist with making pump changes, pressure adjustments, and plant rate modifications.
  • Inspect plant grounds and equipment to ensure proper working order.
  • Take samples and perform chemical testing throughout treatment processes.
  • Inspect and clean water filters as needed.
  • Assist with sludge removal and operation of centrifuge systems.
  • Monitor water quality and flow throughout the plant.
  • Perform minor repairs on plant equipment and ensure all systems are operational.
  • Maintain logs of work activities and document any issues or complaints.
  • Process documentation associated with department operations within designated timeframes.
  • Operate various equipment and tools necessary for plant operations.
  • Communicate with supervisors and other staff to coordinate work activities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Vocational or technical training in water treatment or a related field.
  • Experience in water treatment plant operations (varies by level).
  • Valid Georgia Driver's License (CDL preferred).
  • Georgia Class III, II, or I Water Treatment System Operator License (depending on level).
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in essential functions and apply departmental policies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with supervisory data and control acquisition (SCADA) systems.
  • Knowledge of chemical testing and analysis procedures.
  • Familiarity with water quality monitoring techniques.
