About the position

The Plant Operator - Water Reclamation position at Clayton County Water Authority involves performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled technical and maintenance work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater treatment facilities and systems. This role is crucial for ensuring compliance with established state and federal environmental guidelines. The position is classified into three levels: Plant Operator I, II, and III, each with specific responsibilities and requirements. The operator will be responsible for monitoring plant equipment, collecting and analyzing wastewater samples, and maintaining treatment processes. Additionally, the operator will assist in training other operators and will be involved in various documentation processes related to department operations. As a Plant Operator Trainee, the individual will attend training sessions to gain knowledge about plant operations, job performance, and relevant policies and regulations. They will learn to monitor plant equipment, assist in inspecting operations, and ensure that all equipment is maintained according to manufacturer recommendations. The role also includes collecting and analyzing environmental data, maintaining facilities, and performing general maintenance duties. For higher-level positions, operators will be expected to take on more complex tasks, including the operation of various equipment and tools, and will be responsible for ensuring optimal performance of all treatment processes. The position requires a high school diploma or GED, with additional vocational training and experience depending on the level of the operator. Specific licenses and certifications are required for each level, including a valid Georgia driver's license and a Georgia Wastewater Treatment Operator certification. The role is considered safety-sensitive, and operators must demonstrate proficiency in essential functions and apply departmental policies effectively. Physical demands include moderate physical effort, with tasks involving lifting, climbing, and exposure to various environmental conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor plant equipment by inspecting their operation and observing the SCADA system.
  • Collect and analyze wastewater and bio-solids samples, treated effluent, and surface water.
  • Maintain all treatment processes within the treatment process chain, including pump stations and chemical feed processes.
  • Assist in providing training to other operators in all areas of operations.
  • Process documentation associated with department operations within designated timeframes.
  • Operate various equipment, power tools, and hand tools to complete work assignments.
  • Communicate with supervisors, other employees, contractors, and the public to coordinate work activities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Vocational or technical training in wastewater treatment or a related field is preferred.
  • One to three years of experience in operating and maintaining wastewater treatment facilities, depending on the level of the position.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Wastewater Treatment Operator certification appropriate to the level.
