About the position

The Plant Utilities Assistant (NY HELPS) position at the University at Albany involves performing semiskilled tasks related to the operation and maintenance of steam or high-temperature hot water boilers, HVAC systems, and other auxiliary equipment. This role is essential for ensuring the efficient functioning of the facilities management operations, with responsibilities that include routine maintenance, repair tasks, and potential supervision of Plant Utilities Helpers. The position requires a variety of skills to meet daily maintenance needs and operates under the supervision of a Plant Utilities Engineer 1.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain steam or high-temperature hot water boilers rated at 15 pounds per square inch or more.
  • Maintain and repair boilers for heating systems, air conditioning, chillers, pumps, and other auxiliary equipment.
  • Supervise Plant Utilities Helpers in performing routine manual labor as needed.
  • Perform routine replacement and repair of plumbing and steam fitting equipment.
  • Operate and maintain heating and hot water equipment under supervision.
  • Perform routine tasks of the electrical trade, including repairing electrical equipment and installing lighting fixtures.
  • Monitor equipment consoles and respond to trouble calls.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on HVAC systems and related equipment.
  • Assist in the repair, maintenance, and operation of alarm and signal systems.
  • Provide instructions to Plant Utilities Helpers and Maintenance Helpers on routine jobs.

Requirements

  • Graduate of heating, HVAC, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration apprenticeship program from the U.S. Air Force.
  • Enlisted machinery technician (MK) with the U.S. Coast Guard or possession of a Marine Engineer certificate.
  • Enlisted power generation equipment repairer with the U.S. Army.
  • Enlisted gas turbine systems technician or similar roles with the U.S. Navy.
  • Possession of a Merchant Mariner's Document (MMD) and experience in the engine department.
  • Completion of a New York State Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program for stationary engineers or HVAC.
  • Possession of a High-Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer License or Stationary Engineer License.
  • Bachelor's degree in Facilities Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Marine Engineering.
  • Associate's degree in HVAC.
  • One year of full-time hands-on experience in maintenance and operation of HVAC systems or boilers.
  • Completion of an HVAC certificate or diploma from an accredited program.
