About the position

The Plant Utilities Engineer 1 (NY HELPS) is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment that provides essential services such as heat, steam, hot water, ventilation, air conditioning, and electrical distribution in a safe and efficient manner. This role may also involve supervising Plant Utilities Assistants and other personnel, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and participating in capital planning and improvement projects related to power-plant and laboratory systems.

Responsibilities

• Operate, maintain, and repair mechanical and electrical equipment for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.
• Supervise Plant Utilities Assistants, helpers, contractors, and tradespeople as needed.
• Participate in capital planning and improvement projects related to power-plant and laboratory systems.
• Ensure compliance with safety standards and procedures, including working in confined spaces.
• Oversee preventive maintenance programs and emergency response efforts for plant systems.
• Manage back-up power and generator systems.

Requirements

• Permanent or contingent-permanent competitive service as a Plant Utilities Engineer 1 (G-14) in New York State.
• Familiarity with specialized needs of health-related and laboratory facilities.
• Knowledge of energy conservation methodology in laboratory settings.
• Experience with specialized HVAC systems and building management systems.
• Ability to oversee preventive maintenance programs and emergency response efforts.
• Experience with arc flash and lockout-tagout procedures.
• Universal refrigeration certification is a plus.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in supervising shift work and facility procurements.
• Familiarity with systems necessary to provide laboratory services.
