About the position

The Plant Utilities Engineer 1 will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment that provides essential services such as heat, steam, hot water, ventilation, air conditioning, and electrical distribution. This role is critical in ensuring the safe and efficient functioning of these systems within a health-related and laboratory facility. The position may also involve supervising Plant Utilities Assistants and other personnel, contributing to capital planning and improvement projects, and ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, and repair mechanical and electrical equipment for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and electrical distribution.
  • Supervise Plant Utilities Assistants, helpers, contractors, and tradespeople as needed.
  • Participate in capital planning and improvement projects related to power-plant and laboratory system construction and maintenance.
  • Oversee preventive maintenance programs and emergency response efforts for plant system failures.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols, including arc flash and lockout-tagout procedures.
  • Work in confined spaces as required.

Requirements

  • Must be a New York State employee with one year or more of permanent or contingent-permanent competitive service as a Plant Utilities Engineer 1 (G-14).
  • Familiarity with the specialized needs of a health-related and/or laboratory facility.
  • Knowledge of general energy conservation methodology in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience with specialized HVAC systems and building management systems.
  • Ability to oversee preventive maintenance programs and emergency response efforts.
  • Experience with back-up power and generator systems.
  • Universal refrigeration certification is a plus.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with facility procurements.
  • Familiarity with systems necessary to provide laboratory services.
  • Experience in supervising shift work.
