About the position

The Plant Utilities Engineer 1 position at SUNY Canton involves the operation, repair, and maintenance of various heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and mechanical equipment within the Physical Plant Department. The role requires a candidate with specific qualifications related to HVAC systems and may involve supervising lower-level staff and contractors. The engineer will be responsible for ensuring the efficient functioning of the physical plant operations, including during off hours.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, repair, and maintain heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and mechanical equipment.
  • Supervise lower-level staff including Plant Utilities Assistants and Facility Operations Assistants.
  • Assume responsibility for physical plant operations during off hours.
  • Perform diagnosis and repair of HVAC systems, boilers, and auxiliary equipment.

Requirements

  • Graduate of heating, HVAC, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration apprenticeship program from the U.S. Air Force.
  • Enlisted machinery technician (MK) with the U.S. Coast Guard or possession of a Marine Engineer certificate from the U.S. Coast Guard.
  • Enlisted power generation equipment repairer with the U.S. Army.
  • Enlisted gas turbine systems technician or related roles with the U.S. Navy.
  • Possession of a Merchant Mariner's Document (MMD) and qualified member of the engine department (QMED).
  • Completion of a New York State Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program for stationary engineers or HVAC.
  • Possession of a High-Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer License or Stationary Engineer License.
  • Bachelor's degree in Facilities Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Marine Engineering.
  • Four years of full-time hands-on experience in maintenance and operation of HVAC systems or boilers.
  • Associate degree in HVAC with two years of qualifying experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of an HVAC certificate or diploma from a BOCES program or an accredited technical school.
